NASSAU, Bahamas, August 12, 2021 — The Bahamas today received 128,700 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine donated by the Government of the United States, the first of a total of 397,000 doses donated to The Bahamas by the US.
“The Bahamas now as the vaccines to meet the demand that exists,” said Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Minnis, who received the vaccines at the Jet Nassau FBO, along with United States Embassy Nassau Charge d’Affaires Usha Pitts. “What we need now is Bahamians to come forward quickly to take the vaccine.”
The Prime Minister announced that a phased rollout of the Pfizer vaccine will begin as early as Monday, August 16. More details of the rollout will be announced in the coming days.
The Pfizer vaccine will be available to adults, and children ages 12 to 17 with the consent of a parent or guardian.
The Bahamas is one of the first Caribbean countries to receive this generous donation from the US, through CARPHA, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, said the Prime Minister.
“I thank the Government of the United States of America, CARICOM and CARPHA,” said Prime Minister Minnis. “I especially thank President Joe Biden and his administration. I also wish to thank the US Embassy.”
Prime Minister Minnis and Charge d’Affaires Pitts were joined by Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Darren Henfield, Minister of Health Hon. Renward Wells, Bahamas High Commissioner to CARICOM Reuben Rahming, and other health and government officials.
