D’BAS RANTS: WE BACK!

Darren Bastian (D’Bas) participating in the Independence Day Junkanoo parade on Monday, July 11.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: I had to share this marvelous post by D’Bas on Facebook with readers of BAHAMAS CHRONICLE. The last time I saw Darren Bastian (D’Bas) was when he was a student at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and he came to my apartment  at 738 Longfellow Street,  N.W., for dinner one Sunday in the 1980s (I can’t remember the exact year), but it does not surprise me that he is doing exceptionally well in his chosen career. Of course, he has deep roots in Andros, and I was well aware that he is a Junkanoo fanatic, who was deeply involved in the performances of one of the major groups in The Bahamas over the years,)

Arlene Nash Feruson, one of the preeminent promoters of Junkanoo in The Bahamas, is pictured performing in the Independence Day Junkanoo parade. D’Bas is directly behind her.

NASSAU, Bahamas — Darren Bastian posted this on Facebook on Monday, July 11, with the following narrative:

“D’Bas Rants: We back! From my shackled slumber I rise. From the darkness of sleep, to brightness with opened eyes.
From the lonely streets to the trampled battlefield, my spirit renewed because to stop I did not yield.
To Bay we are back, like we nev’r left, with the spirit of home; no more to wish, yearn or roam.
For Independence celebrated did we; for freedom, pride and love of country.
On familiar ground our forgotten dances found. In a frenzy of trances, tears shed did we, and with familiar smiles our faces filled with glee.
Yeah! We are back to Bay, because for heaven’s sake, we’ll have it no other way!
We back! It feels so good to be ‘home’
