MORE THAN $27.44 MILLION ALREADY SPENT ON PROJECT
NASSAU, Bahamas — Minister of Works Alfred Sears said on Wednesday, January 26, that it will cost $31 million to complete the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium and that the long-delayed project is being remobilized, The Nassau Guardian reported on January 27.
Sears said more than $27.44 million has already been spent on the project, which stalled in 2017, when it was supposed to have been completed.
The original budget for the construction was $27.48 million.
“Madam Speaker, we are not here today complaining, but merely reporting in a transparent manner to this honorable house,” Sears said in the House of Assembly. “Additional funding will be required to complete the stadium in the amount of $31,349,566.28. And this is inclusive of VAT.”
The Minister added: “It needs to be stated that if Woslee Construction Company had been allowed to complete what was started, we would have realized many beneficial opportunities. The completion of the Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium is a key component to the Sports in Paradise initiative.”
Sears said the stadium is expected to host a number of revenue-generating events and noted that the first four tournaments have already been completed.
“The demand for the stadium is manifest,” he said. “And we have $27 million sitting on the ground lying dormant for four years.”
Sears said the stadium is expected to be completed by December of this year.
