U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE BLINKEN EXTENDS “SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS” TO THE BAHAMAS ON 51 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 10, 2024 – U. S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, on behalf of the United States of America, today extended his “sincere congratulations to the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas on 51 years of independence.”

“Over the past five decades, The Bahamas has been a steadfast partner and friend of the United States.  Millions of Americans visit The Bahamas every year to enjoy its radiant sun, crystal blue waters, and sparkling Caribbean culture,” Blinken said in a press statement. “Together we tackle urgent concerns, including irregular migration, transnational criminal activities, and the escalating climate crisis. The United States remains committed to deepening our partnership to ensure the long-term prosperity and security of our two nations.”

Blinken added, “As you mark your 51st year of independence, the United States and the American people extend their best wishes to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Bahamian people in the year ahead.”

On Friday, June 28, 2024 the new $318 million United States Embassy was formally unveiled in Downtown Nassau  as officials and guests celebrated the United States of America’s 248th independence anniversary.

“This new facility is the United States’ physical commitment to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Caribbean region,” J. Douglas Dykhouse, Principal Deputy Director of Overseas Buildings Operations, said at the time.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new embassy also marked the first official event of Kimberly Furnish, the new US Charge d’Affaires, who arrived in The Bahamas four days prior.
