NEW YORK, N.Y., Sept. 6, 2024 – The Hon. Mario K. Bowleg, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, along with Bahamas Consul General to New York, the Hon. Leroy F. Major, and Deputy Consul General Nestor TG Sands were on hand for the WNBA’s New York Liberty’s West Indian Night as they cheered on Bahamian American player Jonquel “J.J.” Jones, a power forward/center with the New York Liberty.

In front of a crowd that included rapper Flavor Flav and NBA legend Dwyane Wade, the Liberty earned a 77-70 victory over the Seattle Storm, assuring they’ll finish no worse than third on the upcoming WNBA postseason bracket. The magic number for the Liberty (28-6) to clinch the top seed is also down to four. Jones ended the night with 15 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks in the game.

Fans who came out to watch the game participated in the West Indian Night festivities, which featured music and performances representing West Indian countries, including The Bahamas. Both Minister Bowleg and Consul General Major showed support for Jones by wearing her newly released KD17 PE sneakers by Nike, which paid tribute to her Bahamian roots.
