A DAUGHTER’S DECLARATION: “MY DADDY WAS SIMPLY EVERYTHING A GIRL COULD ASK FOR”

GUEST COMMENTARY: BY DR. ADAIR WHITE-JOHNSON

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Adair White-Johnson posted a collection of photos on her current trip to The Bahamas  on Sunday, July 9, 2023, and I absolutely had to share some of them with readers of BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the Wider Caribbean. I decided to publish the narrative as a Guest Commentary because like her father — P. Anthony White, the late renowned Bahamian journalist — Adair is an excellent writer.

NASSAU, Bahamas, July 9, 2023 — I always have a great time when I come home. What more can a girl ask for than a beautiful beach and an amazing family right?

The past two days have been simply magnificent. After the beach yesterday, we went the The Bahamas Games to watch the Sailing competition (uhhh, that part was boring) but the vibe? Loved it all!

As I sat and watched my Daddy’s play (see previous post) unfold on stage, I was mesmerized .. I knew my Daddy was a gifted writer, but OMG…this was simply amazing…

My sisters and I laughed and cried throughout the entire play because so much of it was autobiographical and if you knew, you knew…

The ex-wife in the play was an amalgamation of his wives (Daddy had 5 😂😂😂) but we were clearly able to see my mom and their mom (the only two he had children with) —- but it was within one character. Brilliant.

The references sprinkled throughout —character names, zodiac signs, a discussion of my all-time favorite book/movie-The Thornbirds  (Daddy & I had a big argument about the theme of it when I was in college) — took me back to sooo many family moments.

My heart was full when a childhood classmate tapped me on my shoulder and told who she was…We were like in grades 3-5 together. And another who lived across the road from me left a note with her number at the theater after attending the play the night before and hearing that I was coming. Wowww…

We did a drive-by of my childhood home and school and felt so warm and fuzzy seeing FiFi’s house across the street (the one who left the note)💖.

I’m rambling but wanted to share my day beyond the se y beach photos…😜

My Daddy was simply everything a girl could ask for in a Daddy and I was so proud last night. Soooo proud of my Bahamian roots. Absolutely proud.
