NASSAU, Bahamas — Attorney General Carl Bethel said yesterday the Court of Appeal made the “correct ruling” when it quashed a Supreme Court decision ordering immigration officials to grant residency to Jean Rony Jean-Charles, the man at the center of a battle over constitutional rights and correct application of the immigration law.
“We are very happy with the ruling,” said the attorney general when called for comment. “We feel that it was the correct ruling. The court found that there was a procedural error made by the judge and also the court took due note of the fact that the judge himself was uncertain that the person before the court was the person referred to in the birth certificate and unless and until that matter is successfully addressed by the claimant, I don’t see what basis he has to have any further appeal. Never mind what the learned counsel is saying.”
Jean-Charles, who claims he was born in The Bahamas and is of Haitian descent, was arrested by immigration officers last year, detained and later deported to Haiti. https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/10/19/ag-sees-no-basis-for-further-appeal-in-jean-charles-case/
