WASHINGTON, D.C. — His Excellency Simone De Santi, Ambassador and Permanent Observer of Italy to the Organization of American States (OAS), paid a courtesy on His Excellency Sidney Collie, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the OAS, on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at the Embassy of The Bahamas, 2220 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.
In welcoming Ambassador De Santi to Washington D.C., Ambassador Collie expressed gratitude for Italy’s support to The Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.
Italy’s new Permanent Observer to the OAS presented his credentials to OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro on September 3. During the ceremony at the OAS headquarters, 17th Street and Constitution Avenue N.W., Ambassador De Santi recalled the historical ties that link his country to the American continent “where more than 60 million people of Italian root reside,” and the common values that his country shares with the OAS, especially “a deep conviction of the value of multilateralism and international cooperation,” according to the OAS website.
For his part, the OAS Secretary General Almagro highlighted the Italian influence in the Western Hemisphere and the cooperation programs that the Organization carries out jointly with that European country.
“Italy’s contributions to the Organization are key and that effort has been reflected in several electoral observation missions and in various OAS activities in Nicaragua, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru, to name a few,” Secretary General Almagro said, according to the website.
Italy has been an OAS Permanent Observer country since 1972.
