According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, The Hon. I. Chester Cooper, “The Ministry continues to lead discussions with airlines to introduce new routes and increase flight schedules and seat capacity to meet the ever-increasing demand for the destination. These exciting expansions by American Airlines are aligned with the government’s priority to increase air stopover arrivals and create more economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and industry stakeholders”.
American Airlines recently announced a new direct service between Miami and Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, beginning February 3, 2024, with twice weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
The airline has also unveiled plans to expand existing airlift to destinations across The Bahamas this winter, including Exuma, Eleuthera, Abaco, Grand Bahama and Nassau.
According to Dr. Kenneth Romer, Deputy Director General of Tourism and Director of Aviation, “As the country continues to exceed pre-pandemic visitor arrivals, these welcomed announcements solidify an ongoing committed to aggressively attract more airlift throughout the entire archipelago, while simultaneously and arduously addressing the state of airports infrastructure in Grand Bahama and our Family Islands, and managing passengers peak travel experience in Nassau”.
More specifically, Exuma and Eleuthera, islands that both experienced a record-shattering 23% uptick in foreign air arrivals at the end of June 2023 when compared to June 2019, will see an expansion of daily American Airlines flights between Charlotte and Georgetown, and Charlotte and North Eleuthera, beginning February 15, 2024.
In that same period, the airline plans to operate daily flights between Charlotte and Marsh Harbour, Abaco, a destination that is experiencing an impressive Pre-Dorian recovery in overall air and sea arrivals.
As for Grand Bahama, American Airlines ramped up its Miami-Freeport service this summer to twice daily and plan to introduce twice daily flights this fall and winter from Miami along with additional service from Charlotte, into Grand Bahama due to the increasing demand.
The nation’s main airlift gateway, Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), will witness an increase this winter to twice daily service between Washington, DC and Nassau, and three times per day from Charlotte. These additional flights will further support the five daily scheduled flights between Nassau and Miami, daily service between Philadelphia and Nassau, and weekly flights from Dallas Fort Worth and Chicago, with increased service in response to travel demand.
