WASHINGTON, D.C., July 24, 2023 – Scores of Bahamians in the Washington metropolitan-area diaspora enjoyed themselves at the Bahamian American Association of the Washington, DC & Mid-Atlantic Region (BAAWMAR) picnic in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of The Bahamas’ Independence on Saturday, July 22, at the United States Coast Guard Base, 7323 Telegraph Road in Alexandria, Virginia.

From 1pm to 6pm, they enjoyed a variety of Bahamian food — including peas n’ rice, macaroni and cheese, conch fritters and much more –as well as various drinks, music, trivia, games and prizes!

BAAWMAR posted a collection of photos on Facebook on Monday, July 24, and we decided to share some of them with readers of BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean. The photos were posted with the following narrative:

“Thanks to those who joined us on Saturday for BAAWMAR’s Picnic in Celebration of The Bahamas’ 50th Anniversary of Independence! We hope that you enjoyed the Bahamian food, drinks, music and connection as much as we did. In case you missed the Picnic, photos and video can be found at our Facebook and Instagram pages.

We will be announcing plans soon for Association activities for the remainder of 2023!  For those interested in joining the Association, please see our membership registration form here: https://baawmar.org/donations/2023-membership-drive-2/

Until we connect again, lets continue celebrating how proud we are to be Bahamians and how proud we are of how far our country has come over the past 50 years!”

EDITOR’S NOTE: According to its website, “BAAWMAR’s goal is to serve and connect Bahamians, Bahamian Americans and Friends of The Bahamas living, studying and working in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia and beyond.

We aim to promote educational, cultural, scientific, spiritual and artistic contributions of Bahamians in the Washington, DC & Mid-Atlantic Region and in The Bahamas and collaborations with American institutions at various levels.

We aim to bring together Bahamians and persons interested in Bahamian culture in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, to create friendships, national unity, and mutual assistance to charitable, educational, and cultural institutions in need of assistance in the Washington, DC & Mid-Atlantic Region and in The Bahamas.”
