BAHAMAS’ 50TH INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION EVENTS FOR D.C. ANNOUNCED

WASHINGTON, D.C.—His Excellency Wendall Jones, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States,  and His Excellency Chet D. Neymour, Bahamas Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS)  and the Hon. Patrick H. Adderley, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, D.C., have sent out invitations to Bahamians in the Washington Metropolitan-area diaspora and friends of The Bahamas to participate in the celebrations commemorating The Bahamas’ 50th anniversary of independence during the weekend of July 28 to July 30.

On Friday, July 28, a gala reception will be held at the renowned Kennedy Center, 2700 F Street, N.W. Washington, D.C., beginning with cocktails at 6:00 pm. in the JFK Gallery, followed by dinner in the Nations Gallery. The event will feature music by the Police Force Pop Band, paintings from Bahamian artist Mario Smith, and a Junkanoo rush out.

On Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30 , Nova Bossa, 1280 4th St NE, Washington, DC 20002, will host a pop-up shop, featuring designs from renowned Bahamian designer, Ms. Apryl Burrows. On Saturday, July 29 th , from 1 pm to 4 pm, La Cosecha, the Latin market that hosts Nova Bossa, will feature three one-hour long segments, including a Bahamian culinary demonstration, and music from the Police Force Pop Band. Then on Sunday July 30, 2023, a morning church service will be held..

Meanwhile, the Bahamian American Association of the Washington DC & Mid-Atlantic Region (BAAWMAR) has also sent out invitations for “this year’s annual picnic in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Bahamian Independence which will take place on Saturday, July 22nd from 1:00 – 6:00 pm ET at US Coast Guard Base on 7323 Telegraph Road in Alexandria, Virginia.”
