The major reason why sports fans across The Bahamas were giddy with excitement after Golden State won their fourth championship in eight years and seventh in franchise history was Klay Thompson, son of retired NBA superstar Mychal Thompson, who was born and grew up in The Bahamas.

During the wild celebration following the victory, Klay demonstrated that he is extremely proud of his Bahamian heritage by draping himself in the Bahamian Flag. This demonstration of “Bahamian Pride” did not go unnoticed by Bahamians, virtually all of whom mentioned it in their many congratulatory messages on Facebook.

Although Stephen Curry, who scored 34 points and was named the NBA Finals MVP, Klay played a significant role in securing the victory.

As one newspaper remarked, “It marked the end of a long and often grueling journey for Thompson, who missed two-and-a-half years after suffering back-to-back major injuries and endured a difficult rehab process.”

“Tens of thousands of Bahamians and those in the diaspora are very happy to share in the great accomplishment of Klay Thompson,” said His Ecellency Wendall Jones, Bahamas Ambassador to the United  States. “I extend congratulations to Klay and the Golden States Warriors and their fans and invite them to visit The Bahamas, where Klay has deep familial roots. The ebullience for the Thompson family is being expressed among basketball fans throughout our country, which continues to bask in the successes of all Bahamian athletes who compete internationally.”
