Bahamas Consul General to New York Leroy F. Major signing the Book of Condolences to Sir Shridath Surendranath Ramphal

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sept. 4, 2024 — The Hon. Leroy F. Major, Bahamas Consul General to New York, today signed the Book of Condolences to the late Sir Shridath Surendranath Ramphal at the Consulate General of the Republic of Guyana in New York

Sir Shridath was born in British Guyana and was Assistant Attorney General of the West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962, when Guyana was still a colony Great Britain.

Guyana became an independent nation in May of 1966 and Sir Shridath was Foreign Minister from 1972 to 1975. He also was the second Commonwealth Secretary-General, holding the position from 1975 to 1990.

Affectionately known as “Sir Sonny” by the Guyanese people. Sir Shridat died at the age of 95 on Friday, August 30 2024.  He is survived by two sons and two daughters by his predeceased wife, Lois King.
