LOS ANGELES, California, February 20, 2024 – The Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday officially opened a Consulate General in the Center West Building, 10877 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 600, Los Angeles.
Mrs. Joanna Poitier, widow of the late Bahamian actor Sir Sidney Poitier, participated in the official ribbon-cutting ceremony along with Prime Minister Philip E. Davis and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell
“The opening of the Consulate in a strategic jurisdiction reaffirms the commitment of the Davis Administration to protect all Bahamians, further the country’s economic interests, and provide consular support for Bahamians on the West coast of the United States,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on the opening.
The Consulate General in Los Angeles is headed by Consul General Ms. Joy A. Newbold, who will also have responsibility for the following jurisdictions: Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
The statement said the office will eventually house The Bahamas Tourism and Investment
Foreign Minister Frederick A. Mitchell welcomed the opening of the Consulate General, Los Angeles, and congratulated Consul General Newbold.
Foreign Minister Mitchell anticipates that this office will not only provide consular services, but also “help forge people-to-people connections and will bring Bahamians one step closer to Bahamian Arts and Culture being performed internationally.”
The Consulate will observe official Bahamian Government office hours except for Bahamian and local host country holidays.
