BAHAMAS GOVERNMENT REVITALIZING AND MODERNIZING AIRPORTS ACROSS THE FAMILY ISLANDS

By OSWALD T. BROWN

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 9, 2024 – The Office of the Prime Minister posted a collection of photos on Facebook today that I absolutely had to share with readers of my Washington, D.C. – based online publication, BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

The photos were posted with the following narrative:

Construction of the new airport in New Bight, Cat Island, is progressing nicely, with 14 more airports slated for development across the country.

As a tier 2 airport, it will serve as a port of entry, with customs and immigration services, and will be equipped with a state-of-the-art fire station. The design is modern and sustainable, featuring solar panels, smart lighting, and rainwater collection.

Cat Island is underway and we’ll have an exciting update on North Eleuthera International Airport shortly!”

BAHAMAS CHRONICLE EDITOR’S NOTE: As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, The Bahamas is an archipelagic nation consisting of more than 700 islands and cays, extending from just off the coast of Florida like a string of pearls to the eastern coast of Cuba.

The northern island of Bimini is only 50 miles from Palm Beach and 27 of the other populated islands are developed sufficiently to provide their residents with a smorgasbord of amenities to live comfortable lives.

Whille establishing tourism as the mainstay of its economy, the islands gained a reputation as being the playground for the rich and famous, and anyone who enjoys world-class fishing, boating, diving, snorkeling, and sailing.

Nassau, the nation’s capital, which is located on the island of  New Providence, attracts the lion’s share of fun-seeking visitors, followed by  Grand Bahama in second place.

The other islands, collectively called Out Islands, each has its own distinct character and charm. The Abacos and Exumas offer some of the world’s best waters for boating and sailing. Sleepy fishing villages and secluded beaches are notable features of many of the other Out Islands.
