BAHAMAS INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS BEGIN IN D.C. WITH A PICNIC

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 6, 2019 — The Bahamas’ 46th Independence Anniversary celebrations in the Washington, D.C. area got underway on Saturday afternoon, July 6, with a Bahamian-style cookout and picnic at Cosca Regional Park in Clinton, Maryland.

Bahamians in diaspora in the Washington metropolitan area were joined by a number of friends of The Bahamas and some Bahamians visiting D.C. to enjoy an array of Bahamian cuisine at the well-attended event.

The celebration continues on Sunday, July 7, with the annual Independence Church Service at Our Father’s House Ministries Center, 2598 Business Park Center in Waldorf, Maryland, where Rev. Dr. B Spencer Brozozog II, a Bahamian, is the pastor.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to worship at the church of our very own native son,” said Mr. Theo Neilly, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, D.C.

A premier showing of the movie CARGO by Bahamian Kareem Mortimer will be held as an independence celebration event at Landmark’s E Street Cinema, 555 11th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday July 9.

Then on Friday, July  12, the 46th Independence Anniversary Reception will be held at the InterContinental Hotel Washington, D.C. — The Wharf, 801 Wharf Street, S.W., Washington, D.C., when the featured entertainer will be Bahamian recording artist Lady E.

Guests will be welcomed by His Excellency Sidney Collie, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), and Consul General Neilly.

Known as the Bahamian Road Fever Queen, Lady E  was a member of the world-renowned Bahamas Youth Choir and was the lead vocalist for popular bands such as Visage and Ting Um Dem before embarking on a solo career.

As a solo artist, she debuted with her Junkanoo Carnival hit “For You”, which was featured by Disney for the series Scrubs. She is also very well known for her hit “My Islands in the Sun,” featuring Ira Storr.
