NASSAU, Bahamas, April 6, 2020 — Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis has announced that another complete lockdown of Bahamian society will begin at 9pm on Wednesday, April 8, and last until next week Tuesday, The Tribune reported.
“We will experience five days of pain, but a lifetime of resolution,” the Prime Minister said in the House of Assembly on Monday morning.
Dr Minnis said the current 24-hour curfew with exemptions for some essential services will resume on Tuesday and continue for the remainder of April. Meanwhile, the complete shutdown will occur every weekend this month.
The Bahamas was completely locked down this past weekend. Dr Minnis said the lockdown is necessary to help health experts identify “super spreaders” of COVID-19, noting many people can have the virus without symptoms.
On April 5, The Bahamas Ministry of Health confirmed that there was one additional confirmed case of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 29. There have been 23 confirmed cases in New Providence, five in Grand Bahama and one case from the island of Bimini.
The Bahamas Ministry of Health confirmed the overnight death of a 72-year-old male health care worker from New Providence, with no history of travel, who hd been hospitalized. This brings the total number of COVID-19-related deaths to five.
