BARONESS SCOTLAND MEETS WITH NOTED BAHAMIAN WOMEN

NASSAU, Bahamas — During her visit to The Bahamas to see the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian when it slammed into Abaco and Grand Bahama the first week of September,  Baroness Patricia Scotland (centre), Secretary General of the Commonwealth, used the occasion to meet with groups of noted Bahamians, including this group of women that included Mrs. Patricia Minnis (third from right), wife of Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, and Dame Janet Bostwick (third from left), the first female Member of The Bahamas Parliament and a former Attorney General.

In a tweet posted on her Facebook page on October 7, Baroness Scotland noted: “Wonderful to see Mrs. Patricia Minnis and talk about important issues that are not only in the The Bahamas, but also all over the Commonwealth.  Issues such as how women are disproportionally affected by climate change, #vawg and the empowerment of #women as seen at #WAMM.”

Accompanied by the Hon. Darren A. Henfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Abaco, Baroness Scotland got an “up-close” look at areas of Abaco devastated by Dorian when she visited that Northern Bahamas Island on Sunday, October 6, 2019.

Commenting on her Abaco visit on her Facebook page, Baroness Scotland noted that the “devastation hurricane Dorian caused was something I have sadly seen before in Dominica & other Commonwealth countries.”

“What I saw & heard was the resilience & determination of the Bahamian people to build back better,” she added.

Baroness Scotland was selected as the sixth Secretary-General of the Commonwealth during the 24th biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Malta in November of 2015. She assumed the office on April 1, 2016 and is the first woman to hold that post.
