CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR 50TH  INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS UNVEILED

NASSAU, Bahamas, March 16, 2023 — Prime Minister Philip E. Davis joined H.E Leslia Brice, Chair of The National Independence Secretariat, on Wednesday, March 15, to unveil the Calendar of Events for The  Bahamas’ 50th Independence celebrations.

The calendar comprises a host of events, initiatives and recommendations for celebrations throughout all 33 islands of The Bahamas.

“Celebrating independence is about acknowledging the greatness around us, the greatness within us, and the greatness ahead of us,” Prime Minister Davis said. “We are Bahamians. That identity is special.”

Noting that she was beyond excited to present and announce the launch of the 50th Independence Anniversary Calendar of events, Mrs. Brice added, “This calendar celebrates our journey to fifty, our accomplishments through the years and challenges us to press on to further develop a stronger, more prosperous and united nation. It offers an opportunity for all Bahamians to find something that identifies with their ideals, values and expression of Bahamian pride. Bahamians of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds can find events that engage their ideas, spark their interest and represents who they are as Bahamians.”

Mrs. Brice thanked the “hard-working and innovative team of the Independence Secretariat,” then  added: “It is my prayer that your diligence and attention to detail is appreciated by all Bahamians as they flip through the pages and get ready for the jubilant celebrations ahead. To all Bahamians that took the time to share their ideas, concepts, suggestions, constructive feedback and advice, we thank you for ensuring that we present to you today a calendar that only represents our best by showcasing who we are, what we’ve accomplished and all we hope to achieve in the next 50 years.”

She also expressed thanks to “our Family Island Administrators and representatives of our Foreign Missions for ensuring your respective districts and the Bahamian diaspora-at-large is included and celebrated.”

“A special thank you to the late Eldred “Ed” Bethel for sharing with us his ideas and suggestions,” Mrs. Brice said. “It was our hope that Mr. Bethel would have been right along with us to celebrate as his suggestions are intertwined within the pages presented today. We express our gratitude for Mr. Bethel for sharing with us his wisdom and expertise and our sincerest condolences are extended to the Bethel family during this time of bereavement.”

Mr. Bethel, a renowned Bahamian journalist and former diplomat, died on Monday, March 13, 2023 at the age of 82.

Concluding her remarks, Mrs. Brice said: “We invite you to join in all public events and activities, encourage family and friends to attend and tune in where possible. This golden jubilee is a significant milestone and turning point for our country. Let’s celebrate all year-long with enthusiasm, pride and a spirit of gratitude.”
