CAMPBELL LEADS DELEGATION TO 40th SESSION OF UNHRC

GENEVA, Switzerland — The Hon. Frankie Campbell, Minister of Social Services & Urban Development, leads The Bahamas’ delegation attending the 40th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) being held between 25 February and 22 March 2019, at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland. During the session, high-level discussions are held on various human rights related issues, such as the right to privacy, rights of persons with disabilities, rights of minorities, and rights of children, according to the UNHRC website. The UNHRC holds three regular sessions a year, for a total of at least ten weeks. They take place in March (four weeks), June (three weeks), and September (three weeks). If one third of the member states requests so, the council can decide at any time to hold a special session to address human rights violations and emergencies. The Bahamas is the first CARICOM country to be elected to the Human Rights Council. Minister Campbell, who addressed the session on Tuesday, February, 26, is pictured with Mrs. Sharon Brennen-Haylock, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
