NASSAU, Bahamas — U.S. Charge d’Affaires Usha Pitts and Minister of Education, The Hon. Jeffrey Lloyd, were at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau on Thursday, April 22, to receive 119 computers (valued at approximately $30,000) that will be delivered to Bahamian youth on New Providence.
The computer donation was made possible through the support of several high schools in Virginia, thanks to the initiative of Mr. Jay Lightfoot from Northumberland High School (NHS) and His Excellency Sidney Collie, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS)
“This latest donation from U.S. partners will help up to 400 Bahamian students continue their education virtually in a COVID-19 environment. The computers made it to The Bahamas on a KC-135R thanks to the Denton Program, which allows U.S.-based NGO’s to transport humanitarian assistance overseas at minimum cost to them,” the U.S. Embassy Nassau noted on its Facebook page.
The program is jointly administered by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), USAID – US Agency for International Development and U.S. Department of State.
Ambassador Collie along with Theo Neilly, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, D.C., and diplomatic staff were invited to Andrews Airforce Base in Suitland, Maryland, to observe military personnel as they loaded the computers onboard C-130 military aircraft.
