NASSAU, Bahamas, January 5, 2021 — Social Media has been inundated with messages of condolences in the aftermath of the death of Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the founder of Sandals Resorts, on Monday, January 4, at the age of 79.
Among those in The Bahamas offering condolence was Loretta Butler-Turner, former leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) prior to the FNM becoming the Government of The Bahamas in May of 2017.
Mrs. Butler-Turner posted a photo on her with “Butch” Stewart and his son, Adam Stewart, with the following caption: “Mr. Gordon Butch Stewart: 1941-2021. A Friend of The Bahamas. Entrepreneur, Hotelier, Visionary and Humanitarian. May His Soul Rest In Peace.”
According to information gleaned from Wikipedia, Mrs. Butler-Turner “was the first female in The Bahamas to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in mortuary sciences and became the first female embalmer and mortuary director in the country.”
“In 2016 she became the first female to be appointed Leader of Opposition in the Bahamas,” Wikipedia notes, adding: “In 2007, she was elected as a Member of Parliament, serving initially for the Montagu Constituency and in 2012 was elected for the Long Island Constituency. She also served as Vice President of the Inter-American Commission of Women from 2009 to 2011.”
