NASSAU, Bahamas, December 28, 2018 — Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, Democratic Representative for Florida’s 20th Congressional District, stopped in Nassau while on a cruise and took time out today to visit the United States Embassy and met with a group of political and business leaders.
Among those the Congressman met with were prominent Bahamian businessman Sir Franklyn Wilson, Chairman of Sunshine Holdings Limited (SHL), and his daughter Ms. Rosel Moxey, President of Gateway Financial Ltd. (GFL), the nation’s leader in the acquisition and restructuring of distressed mortgages, a wholly owned subsidiary SHL.
Congressman Hastings, whose Congressional District includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties, was first elected in 1992 and is currently serving his 13th term in Congress. Born in Altamonte Springs, he attended Florida’s public schools, and graduated from Fisk University in 1958. He earned his law degree from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
He became the first African-American Federal Judge in the State of Florida when he was appointed to that judicial post by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and served in that position for 10 years.
He currently serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
When contacted, Sir Franklyn, whose Sunshine Holdings Limited is one of the oldest and largest conglomerates in The Bahamas, said his discussion with Congressman Hastings “involved matters of particular relevance to Bahamas relations with Florida in general and South Florida in particular.”
He said Congressman Hastings committed “to return to The Bahamas in the not too distant future with a formal delegation from the Congress.”
