NASSAU, Bahamas — The Ministry of Works and Utilities yesterday signed a $34.2 million contract with Bahamas Hot Mix Company for airside construction work at Exuma International Airport, The Nassau Guardian reported on Friday, February 3, in an article written by Assistant Editor Travis Cartwright-Carroll.
The scope of work includes “pavement rehabilitation works for apron, taxiways, and the runway; new taxiway installation, fencing and drainage; lighting and electrical work; navigational aids and runway markings”.
Minister of Works and Utilities Alfred Sears said this was an important day for Exuma.
“It has taken some time to reach this point, however, we are assured that we have a capable contractor onboard to complete this much-needed project in Exuma…,” he said during the signing ceremony.
He noted that Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Chester Cooper, the MP for the island, was traveling and was unable to attend the ceremony.
Sears said he knew that it was “a proud day” for Cooper.
“I know he has been insistent on progressing this product and I know that were he here this morning, he would really express his pride that we have finally gotten the airside work in motion,” Sears said.
He noted, “It is significant that these infrastructural improvements are being implemented at this time in history of Exuma, especially based further on the impact of its tourism footprint, and how that very existence impacts the entire tourism product of The Bahamas.”
