100 OFFICERS TRAINED IN INTERNATIONAL PORT SECURITY

NASSAU, Bahamas — Stressing that the country’s tourism product must be protected, Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander said last night that the police force will have a zero-tolerance approach to crime in Downtown Nassau, The Nassau Guardian reported on Friday, June 23, 2023, in an article written by News Editor Travis Cartwright-Carroll.

Fernander, who spoke at a police graduation and passing out parade for 229 new recruits in Rawson Square, told officers that the success of the country lies with them. Eighteen recruits from the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) also graduated yesterday.

“I wish to echo your (Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper) sentiments with respect to a zero-tolerance approach to crime in the downtown area where over 30,000 tourists travel through our cruise port downtown on a daily basis,” Fernander said. “I am pleased to inform the Bahamian people that within this group of graduates, for the very first time we have trained and certified in international port security. One hundred officers … trained and qualified and certified as international port security. They can work anywhere in the world at a port.”

He also said that more manpower will be added to policing downtown, as well as four new police trucks.

“Four brand new trucks, Mr. Deputy,” he said. “This will be accompanied with additional manpower added to the tourism policing division to heighten the police visibility from Junkanoo Beach to the foot of the bridge. We have to protect our tourism product.”

On Monday, Cooper warned criminals that they are not welcome in Downtown Nassau.
