DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY CONVENTION DESCRIBED AS “SIMPLY AMAZING”

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Shasheena Rolle-Farquharson, ZNS Northern Services News Anchor, who is participating in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority 56th National Convention being held in Indianapolis July 18-23, posted a collection of photos taken at the convention on Facebook on Sunday, July 23, 2023. We decided to share some of them, along with a couple taken by other Soros, with readers of BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

Shasheena posted the photos, several of which  featured fellow Freeport resident Dr. Catherine Adderley, with the following narrative:

“The 56th National Convention was simply amazing and reaffirms why I am proud to be a part of the largest, greatest and most influential Sorority in the world.

From a powerful speech by guest speaker and U. S. Vice President Kamala Harris to hearing firsthand why our involvement in social action in our communities remain important by MSNBC Correspondent Soror Joy Reid and witnessing the historic Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first African-American woman to serve as a justice of the United States Supreme Court, being initiated among other trailblazing women.

DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INDUCTS SEVEN HONORARY MEMBERS 

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 23, 2023 –Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, which is holding its 56th National Convention July 18-23 in Indianapolis, has inducted seven Black women of high-level positions and trail-blazing legacies as honorary members of the 110-year-old sorority.

The newly inducted members include Ambassador Bonnie Denise Jenkins, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson, Channing Dungey, Rashida Jones, Tamika Catchings, Debra Lee and Phyllis Newhouse.

Shasheena posted this photo with the following caption: One of my favorite pics of the 56th National Convention is with the 16th National President, Thelma Daley. She has led several national organizations, including The United Negro College Fund, The American School Counseling Association, WIN (Women in the NAACP) as well as The Coalition of 100 Black Women and President of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW).

Lee is the former chairman and CEO of BET network, meanwhile, Catchings is a basketball legend, having played 15-seasons with the WNBA team the Indiana Fever. Newhouse serves as the CEO, founder and co-founder for a variety of companies including Athena Technology Inquisition Corp., Xtreme Solutions, and ShoulderUp.

Dungey is the chairman and CEO of Warner Brothers TV Group, Jones is the president of MSNBC, Jenkins is the United States Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security and Brown is the first Black woman to ever serve on the U.S Supreme Court.

The official Instagram page for DST posted pictures of the new members and noted how excited they are to welcome them to their sisterhood.

“Honorary Membership is the highest honor extended to women who have made significant contributions to society while excelling in their chosen fields. We welcome these exemplary women into our beloved sisterhood with great joy and love!” the sorority stated to their social media followers.

Each inductee has had their own groundbreaking careers working in fields such as media, law, business, professional sports and tech.
