EMAIL FROM MY GODDAUGHTER GINA TURNER TRIGGERS A NEW AVALANCHE OF GRIEF

My goddaughter Gina Turner with her late father George A. Smith

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 30, 2023 — As I noted in an article I published in BAHAMAS CHRONICLE and posted on Facebook on Sunday, May 28: “I was plunged into a mentally debilitating dungeon of despair when I found out that my very close and dear friend George A. Smith had died. George and I became very good friends when we both worked at Bahamian Times in the 1960s.”

I also noted that “I was best man in George’s wedding at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral to his first wife Mavis McCartney and that I am godfather to their daughter Gina.”

I had finally composed myself sufficiently to turn off the faucet of  tears and was composed enough  to write Sunday’s article extending  “my deepest, deepest condolences to my brother Philip and the rest of the family”;  however, the floodgate of tears was reopened again earlier this afternoon when I received a telephone call from my goddaughter, Gina Turner,  that triggered a new avalanche of grief.

Gina followed up her telephone  call with an email of several photos that I absolutely had to share with readers of BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and, of course, The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

The photos were posted with the following narrative:

“Afternoon my Godfather.  God gives us the strength we need to get through each day. Included is also a picture with my kids Amber, Alarie and Asiah.”
