NASSAU, Bahamas — Colina Financial Advisors Ltd. (CFAL) President Anthony Ferguson yesterday called on government to liberalize the energy sector in The Bahamas, the Nassau Guardian reported November 15.
He further challenged Bahamas Power and Light’s (BPL) executives to publish the bids submitted for the generation of power.
BPL signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Shell Gas Power Developments B.V. for a gas power project earlier this month. BPL Chairman Dr. Donovan Moxey said the next step would be to negotiate for a power purchase agreement.
Ferguson is of the view that if BPL is only seeking to purchase power from an independent provider for redistribution, Shell is not the best option on the table.
“You’ve been talking about separating power generation from distribution for a long time, so if your view and the new position is you are going to separate the two, let’s make it competitive. We have twenty something radio stations, we have several newspapers, we have multiple banks, let’s go, let’s open it up,” Ferguson said as he appeared as a guest on Guardian Radio talk show “Z Live” along with Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC) Chairman Mike Maura. https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/11/15/ferguson-calls-for-energy-sector-to-be-liberalized/
