NASSAU, Bahamas — Bahamian professional baseball player Lucius Fox Jr. is a happy and relieved man today, getting the first two hits of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career on Sunday and helping the Washington Nationals pick up a much-needed win. They scored five in the top of the first and went on to defeat Bahamian first base coach Antoan Richardson and the San Francisco Giants, 11-5, over at Oracle Park, in San Francisco, California, The Nassau Guardian reported on Monday, May 2.
The other Bahamian in the majors, Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr., came on as a pinch hitter for the Miami Marlins and immediately went to work with a single, but the Marlins fell to the Seattle Mariners, 7-3, at LoanDepot park in Miami, Florida.
Over in the Bay Area in San Fran, Fox was the ninth batter to come to the plate for the Nationals in the top of the first inning and helped to chase Giants starter Alex Cobb out of the game with an infield single to the left side after the Giants overplayed him to the right. Batting left-handed, Fox went after a 90.4 miles per hour (mph) splitter and slapped it the other way. Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford got to the ball but couldn’t get the speedy Fox at first base.
Fox brought home Keibert Ruiz on the play, giving the nationals their fifth and final run in the top off the fifth. They went on to score two in the sixth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth to offset a five-run inning by the Giants in the bottom of the seventh.
Fox’s hit ended an 0-for-20 drought to start his MLB career and certainly gave him the confidence he needed as he went on to make contact on four-straight plate appearances including his second big league hit in the top of the sixth inning. He scored a run in the game, drove in one and also recorded his first stolen base of the season.
For the game, Fox finished 2-for-5 with a run batted in (RBI) and a run scored. For the season, he is now at 2-for-25 with two RBIs and two runs scored, batting .080 with an on-base percentage (OBP) of .115, a slugging percentage (SLG) of .080, and an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of .195.
Fox has started six games at shortstop, including the one on Sunday, and one at third base this year. He has just one error in 18 total chances at shortstop and one in seven total chances at third base. The Bahamian has a fielding percentage of .944 at shortstop and .857 at third base.
In his second plate appearance, in the top of the third on Sunday, Fox took a 95.6mph four-seam fastball on a 3-1 pitch and grounded out to Giants third baseman Jason Vosler. See complete article in The Nassau Guardian at https://thenassauguardian.com/fox-gets-first-hit-in-the-majors-goes-2-for-5/
