NASSAU, Bahamas — William “Billy” McFarland, the creator of the notorious Fyre Festival on Exuma that led to a six-year prison sentence, plans to return to The Bahamas for another event he’s calling PYRT, The Nassau Guardian reported on Monday, November 14, 2022, in an article written by Travis Cartwright-Carroll.
McFarland served four years before his release earlier this year.
On the social media platform Tik Tok, he teased a new venture – a treasure hunt; though exactly when it will occur is unclear.
On its website, PYRT.com, the GPS coordinates for Blackpoint, Exuma, are displayed.
The website has a splash screen requesting a phone number.
“Join the crew,” it reads.
“A PYRT is someone who turns the impossible into an adventure.”
After entering a phone number, the user will receive a text message that contains a link to a website requesting your contact information. A second link contains McFarland’s phone number and email address.
Entering your contact information brings up a screen that reads, “Be on the lookout for a text with your first clue.”
Further videos on Tik Tok show McFarland explaining the event.
He said he will hide 99 bottles with an X mark on them all around the globe. His latest video features people who found a bottle enjoying water sports in The Bahamas.
According to Deadline, McFarland is taking part in a new documentary called “After the Fyre” that will focus on “his next business venture and attempts to pay back the $26 million he still owes”.
Fyre Festival, the doomed destination concert event that never took place, was the brainchild of McFarland and American rapper Ja Rule.
The festival was scheduled over two weekends in April and May 2017 in the Exumas.
It was promoted on social media by various influencers and “ticket buyers were promised an exotic island adventure with luxury accommodations, gourmet food, the hottest musical acts and celebrity attendees”.
However, when concertgoers arrived on Great Exuma on April 27, 2017, they were met with total disorganization and chaos. The festival was set up on the site of a housing development next to two major resorts. Only a model home was at the site, which was the headquarters for the Fyre team.
