FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, July 26, 2024 – Declaring that the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) remains steadfast in its efforts to ensure the safety of the occupants of Lucayan Towers South, the GBPA today said this aspect “remains a top priority for the GBPA, which is committed to taking the necessary and required actions to ensure that the residents have access to a safe and hazard-free place to live.”
In a press statement, the GBPA SAID, “On July 2, the Building and Development Services (BDS) Department of the GBPA issued a notice of intent to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy for the Lucayan Towers South (LTS) property, as well as notified the owners, residents and general public of the proposed action. The notice cited significant concerns regarding the state of repair and potential safety hazards at LTS, as the building has been deemed in need of substantial repairs to alleviate potential dangers to its occupants and the surrounding community.”
The statement added, “However, following the issuance of the notice, the Supreme Court has granted an ex-parte injunction restraining The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited from revoking the occupancy certificate pending further legal proceedings. This injunction acknowledges the complexities of the situation but does not alter the GBPA’s stance on the necessity of repairs to ensure public safety.”
“While we respect the court’s decision to issue an ex-parte injunction, our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of the residents,” said Nakira Wilchcombe, Vice President of BDS. “We firmly believe that the identified repairs are crucial to mitigate the risks associated with the current state of the building.”
The statement said BDS “will continue to monitor the situation closely and work diligently to uphold safety standards while complying with legal obligations,” adding that residents and stakeholders “are encouraged to stay informed about updates regarding this matter.”
