FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, July 2, 2024 – In a statement released today, the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) today provided an update on the Building Code contraventions that resulted in the Building and Development Services (BDS) Department of the GBPA issuing a Final Notice to the Condominium Board of Lucayan Towers South (LTS), stipulating that the Board had 30 days “to present a tangible plan of action to remediate several Building Code contraventions.”
“On July 14, 2023, due to longstanding code violations and serious safety hazards, the Building and Development Services (BDS) Department of the Grand Bahama Port Authority Limited (GBPA) issued a Final Notice to the Condominium Board of Lucayan Towers South (LTS),” the statement noted. “The notice stipulated that the Board had 30 days to present a tangible plan of action to remediate several Building Code contraventions, or GBPA would have no alternative but to revoke the Certificate of Occupancy to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the families and residents of the condominium.
Within the stipulated timeframe, the statement said the GBPA received a “Proposed Plan of Structural and Related Works to the Condominium Building.”
“This proposed plan was reviewed, and items of concern were highlighted and communicated to the LTS Board for their immediate attention,” the statement said. “In September 2023, the Board submitted a revised plan, committing to provide a detailed scope of work and a timeline for commencing the necessary work once approved.”
Continuing, the statement said, “In the spirit of cooperation and with deep concern for the residents affected, the BDS Department provided an extension for the remaining submission. However, to date, the scope of work remains outstanding, and there has been no significant progress.
“As a result, the BDS Department is now forced to escalate its original plan, which includes the revocation of the Certificate of Occupancy for the building, to safeguard its residents. The safety of the occupants of Lucayan Towers South remains a top priority for the GBPA. The organization is committed to taking the necessary and required action to ensure that the residents have access to a safe and hazard-free place to live.
“GBPA has shared its concerns and challenges with the Government, seeking any assistance they can provide to residents who may need Social Services’ intervention.”
