GBPA TO DEMOLISH FIRE DAMAGED ASIAN AND AFRICAN STRUCTURES IN INTERNATIONAL BAZAAR

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, May 2, 2023 — The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) Limited  is continuing its efforts to address dilapidated buildings and structures throughout the city, GBPA announced in a statement released today.

“Collaboration with building owners and stakeholders is ongoing as we work together to revitalize Freeport, Grand Bahama. We will also continue to work with the Government of the Bahamas on approving the amendments to the Bylaws that will empower the GBPA to effectively and efficiently address the remainder of derelict buildings in the International Bazaar and other dilapidated structures within the city,” the statement said.

It added: “Our sixth demolition process for 2023 is occurring tomorrow, Wednesday, May 3, 2023, with the structurally compromised and fire damaged structures located in the Asian & African Section of the International Bazaar.

“We wish to commend the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU), their President Darrin Woods, his Executive Members and Christopher Paine, President of the International Bazaar Owners Association, for responding positively to our appeal to remove the buildings from the city’s landscape.

“We urge the other building owners, particularly of the remaining fire damaged and derelict buildings, to liaise with the GBPA in the continued spirit of cooperation to complete the removal of compromised structures, that are not only unaesthetically pleasing, but also potentially hazardous.  GBPA is committed to protecting the health and safety of the public and it is necessary that the fire damaged structures be demolished. We ask that while demolition activities are ongoing that persons stay clear of the condemned site.”
