GOVERNMENT NOW FOCUSING ON FAMILY ISLAND SHANTYTOWNS

NASSAU, Bahamas — While the government awaits the outcome of a court hearing concerning the eviction of shantytown residents in New Providence, the Shantytown Action Task Force (SATF) will continue its work on the Family Islands, said Minister of Labour Dion Foulkes yesterday.

Supreme Court Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson on Saturday granted an injunction blocking the demolition of shantytown structures.

The government had given residents of most shantytowns on New Providence until August 10 to leave before demolition begins.

The injunction was granted a day after the judge granted leave for a judicial review of the government’s actions regarding the shantytowns.

Attorney General Carl Bethel said there is no possibility that demolition will commence when the deadline expires on Friday.

Speaking to reporters outside Cabinet, Foulkes, who chairs the SATF, said, “The prime minister has given me firm instructions, and our task force, to proceed with all of the programs that we have in the Family Islands, namely in Abaco, Eleuthera and North Andros, in particular.https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/08/08/govt-now-focusing-on-family-island-shantytowns/
