GOV’T DELEGATION MEETS WITH  OECD ON TAX GOVERNANCE

DEPUTY PRIME  MINISTER AND MINISTER OF FINANCE PETER TURNQUEST

NASSAU, Bahamas — The Europeans now have a greater understanding of The Bahamas’ commitment to international standards on tax governance, after Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest met with the European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Nassau Guardian reported November 12.

According to a press statement from the Ministry of Finance (MOF), a delegation that included Turnquest; Minister of Financial Services, Trade and Industry and Immigration Brent Symonette; Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Carl Bethel and a senior advisor from each of their respective ministries, went to Brussels, Belgium to meet with representatives from the European Union’s Code of Conduct Group, the Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Unions, and other representatives of the European Commission.

According to the release, while in Paris the delegation met with the deputy secretary general of the OECD; the deputy director of the OECD Center for Tax Policy and Administration; and the head of the Secretariat of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes.

All of these meetings mark the imminent end to The Bahamas’ commitment to put certain policies in place to pacify global watchdogs that have scrutinized and penalized this country’s financial services sector for not conforming to their standards on certain tax matters. https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/11/12/govt-delegation-meets-with-oecd-on-tax-governance/
