ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada — The Hon. Darren A. Henfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Ms. Helen McEntee, T.D., Minister of European Affairs of the Republic of Ireland, in the margins of the 22nd Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), in St. George’s, Grenada on 14 May 2019.
The Ministers conversed on topics of mutual interest, including BREXIT; climate change; the continued blacklisting of CARICOM member states by the European Union; and the situation in Venezuela. The Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs used the opportunity to present to the Minister of European Affairs The Bahamas’ candidacy for re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organization under ‘Category C’ and to lobby for Ireland’s support of the same. H.E. McEntee spoke to Ireland’s campaign for election for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2012-2022.
The Ministers further spoke on Ireland’s commitment to the Region, including previous support to the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF); the recent appointment of an Ambassador of Ireland to CARICOM, and the plans to establish a diplomatic representation within the Region.
