GUEST COMMENTARY: BY CLINT WATSON
NASSAU, Bahamas, March 27, 2022 — For months I watched her work with passion, dedication, precision and grace. I often wondered when she would reach her breaking point. Pressure after pressure, whether it was conflicting views or strong personalities, she handled them all with the professionalism, temperance and Grace.
From Morning to night while still fulfilling the duties of mother and wife, she worked continuously on her laptop communicating with the palace to ensure every little detail was taken care of. Even when we traveled to CARICOM in Belize I watched the high commissioner. In between sessions, she would race back to her laptop and while we were all taking much needed breaks she was busy making phone calls and answering correspondence.
At times I would whisper a word of encouragement to her or brazenly tell her to stand up for what she thought was a better way when people tried their hand at taking advantage of her sweet spirit and kindness. She would just smile and continue working.
Her Excellency Leslia Miller-Brice has made the nation called The Bahamas proud with her co-chair Jack Thompson and their amazing team. While so many of our leaders, protocol officers and officials must be commended for a successful Royal Visit, I chose to take time to write about Her Excellency because I walked this journey and watched how she performed her tasks when no one saw the late hours, the behind the scene work and the stressful decisions; I was honoured to have been there for a significant portion of it just to support from the sidelines.
No matter how late she worked, when she showed up bright and early the next morning it was always with a ray of sunshine, and a loud and cheerful “Good morning everyone!” It was hilarious, but it woke all of us up and got us smiling for the New Day ahead of us.
It was heart-warming. In the early evenings she would pause from her work to call home to check on her children, to find out about their day at school and even help with homework, a project or make sure they were prepared for a test the next day.
Talk about a super woman! I am truly honoured that we have such excellent people working on behalf of the Bahamian people who don’t just wear a titled call “her excellency” but truly lives this tittle and works this title! Her work is truly excellent and it paid off.
We as a nation say thank you! You have done well! Get some rest…and then it’s onto the 50th anniversary.! Lol! We know you will do well! You have proven just that! Leslia Miller-Brice, during this Women’s Month you have proven to be a rare Gem. We honour and say thank you! Job well done!
