IMMIGRATION APPLICATIONS BACKLOG AT 10,000

MINISTER OF IMMIGRATION BRENT SYMONETTE

NASSAU, Bahamas — Immigration Minister Brent Symonette said yesterday the Department of Immigration has a backlog of approximately 10,000 applications, the Nassau Guardian reported November 13.

“There are some 10,000 applications currently before immigration which need to be processed so the public knows what we’re facing,” Symonette said. “There’s some hard-working people at immigration.”

He said the 10,000 applications consist of work permits, permanent residency, citizenship, etc.

Symonette added: “You’re hearing stories where people have to wait for years to get citizenship and these are issues that we face on a daily basis.”

In September, the department launched a fully automated system for work permit applications.

At the time, Symonette said he hoped the new system would lead to “a faster process of work permits being issued”.

But he told The Nassau Guardian yesterday that the “pure volume” of overall applications was still burdensome for employees of the department. https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/11/13/immigration-applications-backlog-at-10000/
