LEWIS AND PINTARD JOIN FORCES IN ISLAND-WIDE CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN

BY NAVARDO SAUNDERS

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, August 9, 2020 — Minister of Disaster Preparedness and MP for Central Grand Bahama Iram Lewis and Minister of Agriculture and MP for Marco City Michael Pintard have joined forces and launched an island-wide clean-up campaign to remove mounds and mounds of debris left behind by Hurricane Dorian. Lewis’ Ministry is spearheading the clean-up, which is being coordinated by Pintard.

The two MPs are working hand-in-hand with teams to rid communities of old Building Materials & Furniture — drywall, flooring, couches, mattresses, etc.; Hazardous Waste — batteries, paint, cleaning chemicals, etc.; Large Appliances — dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, etc, and more

Today, the duo and their teams were in Hudson Estate, one of the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Dorian.

Hudson Estates is part of the Pineridge Constituency, which is represented by Frederick McAlpine. Almost every home in that community was affected by Hurricane Dorian and to date residents continue to throw out debris as they continue to rebuild.

Noting that it was important to launch the clean-up campaign with Hurricane season now here, Lewis said debris just lying around poses a serious threat to people and property. Residents had been asked prior to the clean-up to take all their debris to the front of their homes for collection.

Minister Lewis said that similar clean-up campaigns are taking place in Abaco and the Cays, which along with Grand Bahama have been named Disaster Zones following Hurricane Dorian.

He said the price tag is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, adding that he and Minister Pintard will continue to work together to ensure that areas that need their assistance get it.
