NASSAU, Bahamas – In a statement released on Sunday, June 20, Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Chairman Fred Mitchell said the PLP “reiterates that the government must see to it that there is a level playing field for all Grand Bahama residents and businesses to benefit from the return of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line to that island.”
“Further, the expected announcement of the sale of the Grand Lucayan Resort after almost four years and hundreds of millions of dollars is long overdue and was poorly handled from the beginning,” Mr. Mitchell declared. “The PLP, like all Bahamians, await the details associated with this deal. After years of delays, empty promises, and millions of dollars of people’s purse wasted, we call for full disclosure and transparency from this FNM government on this agreement.”
The PLP chairman added: “As cruise passengers make a return and a hotel deal is seemingly set for signing, we remind this FNM government that grand announcements leading up to a general election do not erase the neglect, pain, suffering, and struggle the people of Grand Bahama have experienced over the past four years.
“The increased taxes, the scars of Hurricane Dorian, and the restrictions placed on Grand Bahama businesses during this COVID-19 pandemic have not gone away.
“Far too many in Grand Bahama remain homeless, jobless, struggling to pay bills and scrapping for meals. The government cannot expect to make new announcements years later to cover for its unsatisfactory relief efforts and unfulfilled recovery obligations.
“The Bahamian people will not be fooled by last minute political lies and promises this time.
“Dr. Minnis and the FNM have failed Grand Bahama. They must go.”
