NASSAU, Bahamas, April 29, 2024 — Former Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis said yesterday he will indicate at the appropriate time whether he will run for leader at the Free National Movement’s (FNM) convention on June 1. The Nassau Guardian reported today in an article written by News Editor Travis Cartwright-Carroll.

If he intends to run, Minnis has to nominate by this Friday.

“I am presently in discussion with relatives, family, etc., and at the appropriate time, I will make the announcement,” said Minnis, who was FNM leader from 2012 to 2021.

Last Thursday, the party announced it will hold its convention on June 1. Nominations begin today and end Friday. All positions in the party will be up for contest.

FNM Leader Michael Pintard told The Nassau Guardian on Thursday that this will be the final voting convention prior to the next general election

Asked about that, Minnis said, “I don’t know. There may possibly be an election before that, but the party has a constitution. We follow the constitution of the party, and it depends on what the constitution says moving forward.”

The FNM constitution states that a convention shall be held at least once every two years. The party last held a convention in February 2022.

“I’m a believer of the constitution,” Minnis said. “Many would say, oh, I didn’t have convention during my particular time, but check and see the number of conventions I had. Of course, during the pandemic I couldn’t have a convention. During [Hurricane] Dorian, I couldn’t have a convention. You look at the other countries, they didn’t either because they had to deal with the pandemic and different disasters that the world was facing. “I’m a believer, a firm believer, of constitutions.”

Minnis disagrees with the decision to hold a one-day convention.

“The party has called convention; that was the decision of the council, and I accept it,” he said. “However, I don’t necessarily agree with a one-day convention. The convention is a time when the party showcases its talent and its future leaders to the public to convince them that these are the individuals with their views, their ideas to carry the country forward.”
