MOULTRIE LAUNCHES INDEPENDENT BID FOR NASSAU VILLAGE

Bahamas House of Assembly Speaker Halson Moultrie.

NASSAU, Bahamas — House Speaker Halson Moultrie has launched an independent bid for re-election in the Nassau Village constituency, The Nassau Guardian reported on Monday, May 31.

A flyer announcing the launch of his campaign notes that Moultrie would like to see “the current breach of our Westminster model of government resolved and thereby make Cabinet accountable and transparent for their stewardship of the taxpayers’ money and people’s assets”.

According to the document, from the beginning, Moultrie has raised concerns that the legislative branch of government was “constrained” in fulfilling its constitutional oversight of the executive branch by reason of not being autonomous and independent.

“In this regard, against all odds, he has taken the initiative to become an independent speaker and a freed voice on behalf of the Bahamian people,” it reads.

“To succeed in this initiative, an aggressive re-election campaign is being mounted. His opponents are the Goliaths of our modern-day political arena. But yea though he walks through the valley of the shadow of death and debt, he shall fear no evil for God is with him and the nation needs him.

“It is for these reasons that he urge[s] you [to] join this cause, campaign and journey to cure the hemorrhage of the public purse and eradicate corruption and plunder of our nation’s assets.

“The Bahamas needs you. This change cannot be done alone. Our success will reduce our tax burden by saving our nation hundreds of millions of squandered taxpayers’ dollars while at the same time producing immeasurable savings in concessions and exploration of our natural resources.

“Patriotic Bahamians like yourself are urged to join this campaign and national effort to right these wrongs by helping to make a difference.”

One of his re-election pamphlets notes that “this is no ordinary campaign”.

“Mr. Moultrie’s 2021-2022 campaign is a blow for democracy and self-determination by Bahamian people,” it reads.

“One year was lost to COVID-19 but Mr. Moultrie accomplished more in three years than was done in the NVC (Nassau Village constituency) over the past 30 years.” See complete Nassau Guardian article at https://thenassauguardian.com/moultrie-launches-independent-bid-for-nassau-village/
