NASSAU, Bahamas — Yamacraw MP Zane Lightbourne, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Technical & Vocational Training, posted a collection of photos on Facebook on Thursday, August 17, taken at the orientation of new teachers prior to the start of the new school year on Monday, August 28. We decided to share them with readers of BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.
Mr. Lightbourne shared the photos with the following narrative:
Join me in welcoming three hundred forty-three (343) new teachers and education professionals to the public school system just in time for the opening of school on Monday, August 28th, 2023!
Under the theme “Our nation needs its builders! Let’s get equipped”, new teachers gathered at Grace Community Church to begin a two-day New Teachers Orientation on Wednesday, August 16th, 2023. The group included recent University of The Bahamas graduates, teachers from Cuba and other countries, and teachers from the private sector entering the public school system.
On hand to welcome the group of new hires were Minister Glenys Hanna Martin, State Minister Zane Lightbourne, Permanent Secretary Lorraine Armbrister and Acting Director Dominique McCartney-Russell. The new teachers will engage in several sessions over the next two days aimed at helping them to make the transition professionally and personally.
