WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 22, 2023 –: I absolutely had to share this very, very sad news posted on Facebook a short time ago by Ricardo P. Deveaux with readers of my online publication, BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the wider Caribbean.
As a son of Andros, where my navel string is buried in Stanyard Creek, I extend my deepest, deepest, deepest condolences to the family of fellow Androsian Alpheus Finlayson. He was indeed a giant of a man, not only as one of the preeminent sports personalities in The Bahamas, but in life generally.
He was known to be a very dedicated and committed “family man.” Indeed, as Recardo P. Deveaux noted in his post — under the heading, HUSBAND AND WIFE TOGETHER AGAIN–referring to Alpheus. late wife Dawn, “The Family of St. George’s Anglican Church truly knows and can appreciate these two love birds. Dawn Finlayson passed away two weeks ago and now Alpheus Finlayson passed away tonight.
“Alpheus was Mr. Debonair and had a wealth of knowledge and appreciation for sports. Dawn was the official greeter with that beautiful smile. After Sunday service, these two would greet everyone. They were truly the life of any party or function they attended.
“I extend condolences to their daughter Alexis Jade Hanna; Brothers Spence Finlayson and Roosevelt Finlayson; niece Laurena Finlayson and nephew Kwame R. Finlayson and the entire Finlayson family.
Rest in peace Alpheus and Dawn and rise in glory.”
