NASSAU, Bahamas, November 14, 2018 – His Excellency Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), paid a courtesy call on the Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at the Cabinet Office in the Churchill Building, Rawson Square, downtown Nassau.
A career diplomat, prior to his election as the Assistant Secretary General of OAS during the 49th Special Session of the OAS on March 18, 2015, Mr. Mendez was Belize’s Ambassador to the United States, Permanent Representative to the OAS and High Commissioner to Canada.
He previously was an advisor to the Belize High Commission in London from 1997 to 1999 and holds a postgraduate title from George Washington University in International Affairs.
Assistant Secretary General Mendez serves along with former Foreign Minister of Uruguay Luis Almagro, who was elected Secretary General of the OAS. They succeeded Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza of Chile and Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin of Suriname.
When he officially began serving his five-year term as Assistant Secretary General of the OAS on July 13, 2015, Mr. Mendez reiterated a commitment he made after he was elected to work closely with Secretary General Almagro in the process of modernization of the OAS.
“We must find ways to overcome our challenges and create the enabling environment for economic and social prosperity by identifying new areas of cooperation, creative financing mechanisms, and maximizing the catalytic potential of the OAS,” he said at the time.
