OAS HOSTING TENTH INTER-AMERICAN MEETING OF MINISTERS OF EDUCATION

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 8, 2019 — The Tenth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Education begins today in the Simon Bolivar Room at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters, 17th Street and Constitution Avenue, N.W.

According to the OAS website, “The highest educational authorities of the hemisphere will seek to approve issues regarding the Plan of Action for the Inter-American Educational Agenda, which has three axes: quality, inclusivity, and equity within education; strengthening the teaching profession; and comprehensive attention to early childhood.”

Bahamas Minister of Education Jeffrey Lloyd is not attending the meeting, but is being represented by Permanent Secretary Lorraine Armbrister and Ms. Sharon Poitier, Deputy Director of Education with responsibility for curriculum.

The meeting was officially opened at 9 a.m. by the OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and the Hon. Michael Browne, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of Antigua and Barbuda.

“The Inter-American Education Agenda: Building Sustainable Partnerships through Cooperation, with renewed focus on Education and Skills Development for better citizenry” was the first item scheduled on the agenda for the first Plenary Session following the official opening.

The leaders of education in the region will discuss a raft of other education-related issues during plenary sessions over the next two days.
