GUEST COMMENTARY
(EDITOR’S NOTE: This was posted on Facebook by Carlyle F. Bethel. It is such a powerful “Mother’s Day Tribute” that I am compelled to share it – although it’s not that long—as a “Guest Commentary” in BAHAMAS CHRONICLE. I hope Carlyle does not mind me doing so without his permission. Carlyle is the son of Attorney General Carl Bethel and Lisa Marie Bethel, but I suspect that he inherited his writing skills from is grandfather, Sir Arthur A. Foulkes, one of The Bahamas’ greatest journalists.)

NASSAU, Bahamas, May 12, 2019 — Every year, we celebrate Mother’s Day and shower the women in our lives with love and adoration, as they rightfully deserve!
Yet, throughout history, women have been some of the most marginalized and disenfranchised groups of people. We see all manner of man-made institutions keep women and mothers from achieving the true level of success that they deserve. It is sometimes said that a woman must work twice as hard as a man only to receive half as much as him.
On this Mother’s Day we ought to shower the mothers and mother figures in our lives with love, but our love for them must not stop there. It should also be reflected in our daily actions.
I will never know and experience the joys and struggles of being a mother, but I can always show my love and appreciation for those that do.
I encourage and challenge everyone on this Mother’s Day to look at themselves, examine their thoughts, words and actions and ask yourself how can you make life a little more just, a little more fair and a little more equitable to women and mothers everywhere.
On this Mother’s Day, I would like to thank all of the mothers and women for all of their sacrifices. Even the ones that go unnoticed or unappreciated. You are worthy of all the praise!
Happy Mother’s Day! ❤️
Sincerely,
Carlyle W. F. Bethel
