NASSAU, Bahamas — Leader of the Opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Philip “Brave” Davis released the following statement on Sunday, April 1, 2021 congratulating our professional athletes:

“With the current class of professional athletes entering the professional ranks in multiple sports disciplines, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is fast becoming world famous as an international sports factory and destination.

I offer congratulations to our 2021 athletes, Evan Mobley and Lucius Fox.

Evan Mobley has deep Bahamian roots. This University of Southern California Trojan was selected third overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2021 NBA draft. He is the grandson of Bahamian Bernie Nichols. He joins Kai Jones, the 19th overall pick who is with the Charlotte Hornets.

Joining Bahamian Jazz Chisholm in the Major League is Bahamian Lucius Fox, short stop and second baseman, who was called up to the Kansas City Royals on Friday, 30 July 2021.

These elite athletes join present and past Bahamian stars such as world champion Mychal Thompson who entered the NBA in 1978; Jonquel Orthea Jones who was selected 6th overall in the WNBA draft by the Connecticut Suns in 2016; Dexter Cambridge, who played for the Dallas Mavericks in 1993, Rick Fox, Deandre Ayton and Buddy Hield.

These young Bahamian athletes defied tremendous odds to perform at the highest levels in professional sports entertainment globally. They continue to inspire a generation of Bahamians while strengthening the Bahamas global sports tourism brand. Their elite accomplishments continue to draw the connection between local youth and sports development and national economic development.

The Progressive Liberal Party is fully committed to continuing and strengthening our *SPORTS IN PARADISE* vision and policy for youth and sports development. The Bahamas must develop, own and manage its sports brand  and transform sports into a significant pillar of the national economy.

Congratulations to all of our elite athletes who continue to make us proud as global Ambassadors of goodwill through the medium of sports entertainment.
