NASSAU, Bahamas – Progressive Liberal Party Leader (PLP) Philip “Brave” Davis along with Ms. Patricia Deveaux, PLP candidate for Bamboo Town, recently took a Small Business Tour of the Bamboo Town constituency, where they met Owenester and Shanishka Smith, owners of Needs Convenience Store.
A post on Facebook noted that the “Smiths have provided their fellow Bamboo Town residents with snacks and drinks since 2014.”
“Mr. Smith is no stranger to entrepreneurship,” the post stated. “He and his wife used funds from his successful business, Smithy Boy Trucking, to start the convenience store in 2014.”
A Bamboo Town resident for over 30 years, Mr. Smith plans on further expanding his business portfolio with the opening of a heavy-equipment oil company in the near future.
“Although the pandemic has been a turbulent time for the Smiths, their store continues to serve the people of Bamboo Town, holding its own against larger stores in the area,” the post noted.
It added: “Patricia Deveaux, candidate for Bamboo Town, and I want to introduce the PLP’s economic plan in order to streamline the process of starting a business so that Mr. Smith can start his oil company sooner than later. We also have a plan to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in The Bahamas so that small business owners can have confidence in the future.
“The Smiths are a great example of what everyday people from a community like Bamboo Town can accomplish when given a chance.”
The PLP’s website describes Patricia Deveaux as “a devoted public servant, entrepreneur, community activist and daughter of Bamboo Town.”
“She has served as a Senior Executive Secretary in the Ministry of National Security for 30 years, maintaining the administration of the Drug Enforcement Unit’s General Investigation Unit, Tracing & Forfeiture & Money Laundering Division,” the website states.
It adds: “Patricia is no strange to politics, having served in numerous roles including National Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, Chairman of the Kennedy constituency and Chairman of Bamboo Town constituency,”
