PM HEADED TO ST. LUCIA FOR CARICOM HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING

NASSAU, Bahamas, June 30, 2019 — The Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, leaves  for Saint Lucia on Monday, July 1, 2019,  for the 40th Regular Meeting of the Conference of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The Cabinet Office announced in a press statement on Saturday, June 29, that the Prime Minister “will lead a delegation of senior government officials to the three-day meeting, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Darren Henfield; Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar; and High Commissioner of The Bahamas to CARICOM, His Excellency Reuben Rahming.”

The Prime Minister Minnis will also be accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Minnis.

“Discussion items on the meeting’s agenda include security, the situation in Venezuela, blacklisting and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy,” the Cabinet statement revealed. “Caribbean leaders are also scheduled to discuss matters related to regional tourism and finance.

The Conference of Heads of Government, which consists of the Heads of Government of the Member States, is the supreme Organ of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and determines and provides its policy direction.

In addition to this function, it is the final authority for the conclusion of Treaties on behalf of the Community and for entering into relationships between the Community and International Organisations and States. The Conference is also responsible for making the financial arrangements to meet the expenses of the Community, but has delegated this function to the Community Council. Decisions of the Conference are generally taken unanimously.
